The City of Lander Police Department’s Highway Patrol Districts have launched an aggressive traffic enforcement initiative aimed at curbing unsafe driving on the highways throughout Lander. The operation, which began earlier this month, focuses on speeding, commercial vehicle regulation, and other dangerous driving behavior.

Department officials say the initiative is part of a bigger strategy to increase highway safety via an increased uniformed presence and stricter enforcement. “Our goal is to ensure drivers understand that dangerous driving on the highway has real consequences,” said Sergeant smellychickennuggies of the Lander Police Department. “By focusing on stricter highway enforcement, we’re working to make the City of Lander a safer and more orderly place overall.”
According to the department, Lander Police Officers have responded to nearly twice as many traffic related incidents this year—including accidents, hit-and-runs, and reports of reckless drivers—compared to 2001. In response, the Lander Police Department is deploying Highway Patrol District officers to maintain an increased patrol presence, conduct radar speed enforcement in high traffic areas, and establish police checkpoints targeting unlicensed drivers and commercial vehicle violations. The department reports a noticed decrease in unsafe driving and plans to continue enforcement efforts through the fourth quarter of 2002. Authorities are urging drivers in the Lander area to obey traffic laws and expect a stronger law enforcement presence on Lander’s highways.
