On August 14th, citizens gathered around the shores of Mersea to participate in a recreational fishing event. After the recent fishing update, locals of Clark County flocked to the lake with their fishing poles to catch fish and socialize with each other. Law enforcement officers and officials from the Clark County Regional Hospital attended the event to participate and to tend to the safety of other attendees.

As the event continued on into the evening, the gathering drew the attention of some less-favorable individuals. Several armed gunmen neared the scene and began to open fire on fishers from varying locations, resulting in multiple casualties before officers were either able to neutralize or detain the attackers. Many vehicles were damaged during the violent altercations.

Following the shootings, less citizens were inclined to remain at the scene, and participants at the event drastically lowered until the beach was empty. While the initial outcome of the convention was satisfactory to many, the end result may put into question the security of public events going forward.
